Elizabeth Gilfilen - Mica Muse: Online Viewing Room
These works began with experimentation with a new material. I wanted to find a non-literal way to depict light coming from the distant landscape; the light that was coming from behind lines of trees on the horizon.
I prepared a gritty, sandpaper-like ground of mica paint on layers of recycled old drawings. I challenged myself to really look at the tree line, the branches and their silhouettes. These edges and forms became a springboard for my hand to improvise. Through looking, I ultimately landed back in my own visual language with new visual information.
